THE SKY IS FALLING
August 12, 2025 - Wildfires are raging across Canada, the United States, and Europe. Record temperatures ,well above the average normal, are being recorded most everywhere, wars rage, the oceans’ water temperature has risen, species are threatened, and peoples in Third World countries are panicking, and migrating, as starvation looms……
I don’t know the exact date, nor year, so I’ll just say that it was sometime in the early 1990s, or late 1980s, when one evening I travelled to Barrie, Ontario. to attend a talk given by David Takayoshi Suzuki, a Canadian academic, science broadcaster, and environmental activist, and host of a popular television program entitled The Nature Of Things. David’s message for the sell out crowd in attendance was “ the sky is falling”, or something to that affect, and that if we didn’t take action then humanity was doomed.
If you’re wondering why I was there, good question. I was gifted the ticket by someone who wasn’t able to attend, but thought that I might find the talk interesting, given the fact that I was not only interested in nature, but spent a lot of time attempting to educate others about nature, and the fact that our natural heritage was a gift, and something that should be preserved for future generations.
Thirty-five - forty years later, we have to ask ourselves, were our efforts ringing the bell to draw attention to what we knew was coming if action weren’t taken, successful? Well, look around, what do you see.? The oceans are dying, species are being driven into extinction, the world’s temperature is on the rise, the ice caps are melting, food shortages and water are scarce in many countries, wars are raging, millions are migrating, heat waves are causing drought that exacerbate wildfires, while disrupted weather patterns are causing unusual storms and flooding, disrupting the lives of millions. The evidence speaks for itself. We now have no option but to try to adapt to what’s coming. There’s no going back. However, and I hate to be a pessimist, but I do think, no I believe, that, like David’s warning, humanity will continue to be driven by its flaw, greed, and will like sheep to the slaughter, stand silently while watching the sky falling.
And, if you can believe it, despite all the evidence, there are those in powerful positions that deny global warming. What’s the saying to” quote the movie character Forest Gump, “stupid is, as stupid does”, which aptly describes many of the world’s leaders of today.
THERE’S NO GOING BACK
Wish we may,
wish we might, but
despite wishing,
there’s no going back.
Global warming is a fact, and
there really is no going back.
Even should we halt the slide
damage has been done, and
what’s done, can’t always be undone, as
for every action, there’s another action,
then another,
and so on,
and on,
forever on.
The best that we can hope for
is to halt the slide, then
fix what is feasible, and learn to live
in the mess that we’re now in.
And….
No sense pointing fingers,
the haves ,and the have nots,
our dreams the same,
we’re equally to blame.
Time is wasting,
we must come together,
try to change the weather,
and cool the sky now burning.
And…
If we fail to succeed,
fail to change the weather
life on this planet
will cease to matter.
