LIFE ELSEWHERE

Life Elsewhere

When I was young,

growing up,

I marvelled at the natural world,

but little did I know,

nor understand,

that it was eroding.

I read about the Passenger Pigeon, and

how it failed to survive, but

that we had a picture

was good enough for my eyes.

I read about dinosaurs,

marvelled at their demise, and

searched out rocks with fossils,

and learned about long passed times.

But little did I realize,

as I was learning, that,

before my very eyes

the world was ever changing,

its resources shrinking,

humanity was marching,

bent on conquering,

then shaping,

a world for its pleasing.

With every conquest

there are but a few winners,

far more losers, however,

blind to what we were losing,

we struggle to survive.

 Morals and ethics,

shaped to fit design,

levelled mountains, and

robbed us blind

of nature’s wonders.

But,

few really care,

have the time to care,

wrapped up in their survival.

 Lost,

we wander,

everywhere.

The bones have been collected,

a digital record,

proof of our existence,

will tell the story of a species,

that recklessly squandered.

A message for those who might wander,

in space and time,

exploring rocks in search of life …..

elsewhere.

We humans, pedalling backwards in time, probably had no choice but to accept that the plundering of the earth's resources was justified, considered as simply progress, a part of our evolution. Unfortunately we seem to have been blinded by our greed, and we now face a very bleak future. Some would say that there's still time to turn things around, but truth be said, there isn't. I look at the movie made a decade, or so ago, entitled "BladeRunner", and as the days go by see more and more that it resembles the path that humanity has taken. I'm also reminded of the song, "Wonderful World".which it used to be, and now isn't.......
